We are pleased to present a short interview with Sarah Dozier, who wrote “The Menagerie” for Sword & Sorceress 22.
1.) Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am a junior at Texas Christian University, English major theatre minor. I joke that I’ve picked a major I like and one day I’ll be living in a box. Right now my life pretty much revolves around my classes and my writing. So there have been no glorious battles, except those done in class debates. And there are no pets, unless you count stuffed animals of which there are two penguins and an owl. I’ve tried to add some humor to this but I think I might have failed. Oh well.
2.) What made you take up writing?
I just like to write. Fiction mainly. I’ve been reading fiction, fantasy, and science fiction practically my whole life. I think my parents read Heinlein and Bradbury to me when I was an infant, which might explain why I’m a little crazy. I’ve always wanted to write like the people I had been reading. When I got the email that said my story had been accepted for S&S22 I literally started screaming. I hope that one day I can be at least half as good as Marion Zimmer Bradley. She and Anne McCaffrey have been my writing mentors. I really respect their writing and love their writing styles.
3.) Tell us about your S&S 22 story.
I actually wrote it in about a week. I gave it to my professor Jeff Guin, who said he liked it. I submitted it to S&S 22 and completely forgot about it till I got the email saying they were considering my story. It’s a story about a war and how it ends. It’s a pretty short piece and if I say anything else I’ll give away the ending!
4.) Can you share an appropriate teaser paragraph from your story?
Nope. You’ll get no teasers from me. It’s a very short piece (barely a thousand words).
