Install Google Picasa 3 On Ubuntu Linux 9.10 Karmic Koala
Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala comes with the F-Spot photo management application, but sometimes it seems like the rest of the world uses Google’s Picasa for photo management. Fortunately, Google and Microsoft are mortal enemies, which means that it’s quite easy to install Picasa on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala.
To install Picasa on Ubuntu, download the .deb installer from the Picasa website here:
http://picasa.google.com/linux/download.html#picasa30
You’ll want the package marked “deb, for Debian/Ubuntu”, with the 32-bit (i386) or the 64-bit (x86_64) depending upon which version of Ubuntu you’re actually running. Once the package has finished downloading, double-click on the .deb file to launch it. Click on Install, enter your password, and Picasa will install, along with its dependencies and a specific version of WINE that Picasa relies upon.
Once the installation has finished, you can launch Picasa by going to the Applications menu, to the Graphics category, and then to Picasa’s icon itself. When you first launch, Picasa will ask if you want GNOME to launch Picasa when you connect a camera, and you can choose yes or no based upon your preferences. After you agree to Google’s license terms, you can start using Picasa on your Ubuntu system.
