Install Amarok On Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala

There are a lot of music players available for Ubuntu, and Amarok is one of the more popular ones. As an added bonus, it only takes one terminal command to install it on Karmic Koala. Go to a Terminal window and type this command:

sudo apt-get install amarok

Enter your password to authenticate, and apt-get will download and install Amarok. Amarok was originally designed to integrate with KDE (Ubuntu uses the GNOME desktop environment instead), so it will first need to download quite a lot of KDE stuff to work properly, about 200 megs worth. After the dependencies & Amarok are install, you can launch Amarok by going to the Applications menu, to Sound & Video, and clicking on the Amarok icon.

Note that Amarok will run just fine in Ubuntu, but that it doesn’t run particularly fast. I think you’d be better off using Rhythmbox or Banshee if you want to use GNOME, and Amarok if you’re a KDE fan.

UPDATE: See the comment thread for an Amarok developer’s thoughts on KDE vs. GNOME for Amarok’s speed. He suspects it may have more to do with the video driver than with GNOME, and since I do all my Ubuntu testing in a virtual machine, he may be right.

Jonathan,

whether Amarok runs in KDE, or GNOME, or any other desktop environment, should have no impact on its performance at all. The libraries used by it are always the same.

More likely your graphics driver and similar low-level system components may have an influence.

Thanks for the blog anyway :)
