Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat on a netbook

Here’s an interesting article describing one man’s experience installing Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition on his netbook. Key quote:

There’s been a time-sucking monster slowing down my poor little netbook. I call it “Java the Hut.”

Yes, I’m talking about those jarring Java updates whose sudden intrusions stall my Windows 7 Starter operating system.

Oh, heavens, yes. Java updates are horrible, with their constant nagging little updates and warning bubbles in the notification area. Plus, Java updates regularly, and on a Vista/7 machine, that means the boot process grinds to a halt once you get the User Account Control warning for the Java update.

And Windows 7 Starter is the deformed mutant stepchild of the Windows family. There’s lots of legitimate debate on whether or not Ubuntu is superior to Windows 7 or vice-versa, but Ubuntu 10.10 is vastly superior to Windows 7 Starter in all aspects.
