Hi Jonathan – I’m considering trying out Ubuntu (I’ve never run Linux before, except for using a BootMed-type CD to rescue files from a dying laptop
). The current release is 11.10, and I’m hearing a lot of good things about it. I’m also thinking, “Hey, a 99c eBook to help me get started!” But I don’t know how different 11.10 is from 11.04. How much of your book would I need to modify to be accurate w.r.t. 11.10?
Thanks so much!
Hi Jay,
Currently, I think the only thing in the book that won’t work with 11.10 is the chapter on setting a static IP and installing a DHCP server on Ubuntu, and the part about Synaptic Package Manager, which was taken out of 11.10 in favor of Ubuntu Software Center. Otherwise, all the information should still work on 11.10. I should have the book updated for 11.10 in January, if my schedule holds up.
Also, I should mention that the book mostly centers on doing things via the command line. There’s some stuff in there about the GUI, but the bulk of the book is about the command line.
Hope that helps!

Well, I did a lot of C programming on UNIX machines back in college (BSD 4.3, which dates me pretty accurately I’m sure), so I’m not too discouraged by the command line.
Thanks so much for the quick response!
Jonathan,
This is a great book. This and another book inspired me to make the conversion from Windows 7 to Ubuntu, and to document the experience in the form of a blog. I am on Day 2 of a 90 Day fair chance to Ubuntu.
Your book had a lot of great information in it. Especially CH 15, The Eight Best Applications…. Also, I took your advise and gave The Battle For Wesnoth a try. I am hooked on that game.
After my 90 Days is up, and I make the permanent conversion to Ubuntu, I plan to convert my Home Server to Ubuntu Server. Any chance that you will do a book on Ubuntu Server?
Thanaks Again. And if you want to check out my little blog: http://www.mylinuxproject.com
