ebook sales for 2013, part two

Apropos of my last post about ebook sales in 2013, there is one fact I would like to mention since it illustrates the point of my last post so perfectly – in January of 2014, my book THE DESTROYER OF WORLDS (the 4th and final book of my THE TOWER OF ENDLESS WORLDS series) sold its 1,000th copy since I published it in June of 2012.

I would like to thank everyone who bought and enjoyed the book. Additionally, I think that is really remarkable, for reasons I shall explain below.

I wrote THE TOWER OF ENDLESS WORLDS series in its entirety in 2003, and found a publisher for the first book in 2004. Due to a variety of circumstances, the book did not come out until 2008, and did not sell very well. I received just enough in royalties to buy a Big Mac. Needless to say, the publisher was not interested in the subsequent volumes.

So when the Kindle came along, I got the rights to the first book back, and published the entire series in June of 2012. Compared to some of my other books, it has not sold that well – GHOST IN THE SURGE did 1,000 copies in a single month – but I’ve given away thousands of copies of the first book for free, and each of the subsequent books has sold over 1,000 copies.

Think about that. That means over one thousand people read THE TOWER OF ENDLESS WORLDS for free, and liked it enough to spend $9 to buy the remaining three books in the series and read the adventures of Ally Wester and Arran Belphon and Thomas Wycliffe all the way through to the end. Obviously I’ve made a pleasant bit of money from this, but that’s not the main point – a thousand people have read the series, something which would have been literally impossible under traditional publishing. In fact, I know it is literally impossible, because I tried it in 2008, and saw the results.

So, if you are a new writer, you are infinitely better off self-publishing than attempting the madman’s lottery that is traditional publishing. Unless there is a publisher backing a dump truck full of $100 bills up your driveway (which, as one might expect, happens very rarely) you are better off self-publishing.

Which would you rather have? An agent’s “send me the rest of the manuscript” letter, or a complete stranger who paid $9 to read all three books in the series to the end?

Reader Question Day #60 – the end of DEMONSOULED and THE TOWER OF ENDLESS WORLDS

bitetheasp asks:

Is ‘Worlds to Conquer‘ related to the ‘Tower of Endless Worlds‘ series?

Yes. Well. Sort of.

To sum up a long story, I pretty much spent all of 2003 writing the entirety of what would become THE TOWER OF ENDLESS WORLDS series. I wrote it as one book, and by the time the final draft was done, it was about 300,000 words. No publisher on God’s green earth is going to publish a 300,000 word book, so I split it up into four, and started trying to sell the first volume, which I called WORLDS TO CONQUER. Eventually, I did sell the first volume, and it was published in August of 2008.

Unfortunately, it did not sell very well, and I made just enough money to buy a double Whopper with cheese, which was delicious, and that was that. I washed my hands of it and forgot about it.

But! Fast forward to 2011, and I discovered ebooks. I got the rights back to WORLDS TO CONQUER, renamed it THE TOWER OF ENDLESS WORLDS, and published the series as ebooks in June of 2012. I made the first book in the series, THE TOWER OF ENDLESS WORLDS, free, and then I set the three remaining books – A KNIGHT OF THE SACRED BLADE, A WIZARD OF THE WHITE COUNCIL, and THE DESTROYER OF WORLDS, for $2.99 each.

Since then the three paid books have sold together an average of about 180 copies a month, a fact for which I am very grateful. It’s quite a bit different than DEMONSOULED or THE GHOSTS, and I’ve never written anything else quite like it. So I’m grateful that people have been enjoyed them.

If you’re curious about the series, I frankly recommend that you get the free ebook version of THE TOWER OF ENDLESS WORLDS rather than the paper version of WORLDS TO CONQUER. It’s free, for one thing, and I’ve also revised and edited it quite a bit.

Scott asks, concerning the DEMONSOULED series:

This is a great series I hope to be reading them for a long time to come. Any idea how many more are to come???

SOUL OF SWORDS will be the last book in the DEMONSOULED series. I’ve been working on DEMONSOULED on and off since 2001, and I would like to try my hand at a new setting and new characters.

That said, I do plan to return to the world (and some of the characters) of DEMONSOULED in later books. Like the way Terry Brooks keeps returning to Shannara, or Terry Prachett to Discworld (though hopefully without Mr. Prachett’s well-publicized support for euthanasia). So someday we will have new books in the DEMONSOULED world.

Independence Day free ebooks

Today is Independence Day, when Americans celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence with bratwurst, alcohol, and explosives. (Of course, it’s also the 1,598th anniversary of the Eastern Roman Emperor Theodosius II yielding power to his sister Aelia, but that doesn’t get celebrated quite as much. Certainly with less beer, in any case.)

But if you’re traveling today, or stuck visiting relatives and want to sneak away and read, I’ve got you covered. Oh, I’ve got you covered, with no fewer than four free ebooks for your reading enjoyment.

DEMONSOULED is the first novel of my DEMONSOULED series, sword-and-sorcery tales chronicling the adventures of the knight Mazael Cravenlock as he wages war against serpent men, inhuman invaders, dragons, and other creatures. I’m working on the rough draft for the fifth book in the series, SOUL OF SORCERY, and hope to have it available by the end of September. You can get DEMONSOULED for free at Amazon.comBarnes & NobleiTunes, and Smashwords, and also at Amazon.co.uk.

CHILD OF THE GHOSTS is the first book of my THE GHOSTS series, about the adventures of Caina Amalas, an elite spy and assassin who fights rogue sorcerers, slave traders, corrupt lords, and anyone else who threatens to overthrow the Empire of Nighmar.  There are four books in the series, and I’m going to do a short novella in the series, DREAMDAGGER, as soon as I finish SOUL OF SORCERY. CHILD OF THE GHOSTS is available for free at Amazon.comBarnes & NobleiTunes, and Smashwords, and also at Amazon.co.uk.

THE TESTING is the first novella in “The Third Soul” series, about Rachaelis Morulan, an apprentice mage in the corrupt Conclave of Araspan. It’s free at AmazonAmazon UK,Barnes & NobleiTunes, and Smashwords.

THE TOWER OF ENDLESS WORLDS is the first book in an urban fantasy series about an evil wizard from a high medieval fantasy world and an evil politician from Chicago. The politician gives the wizard guns to conquer his world, and the wizard teaches the politician black magic to dominate the political scene. It’s not yet free on Amazon, alas, but you can get it for free on Barnes & NobleiTunes, and Smashwords (and Smashwords as a MOBI format that you can read on your Kindle device).

Happy 4th of July, and happy reading!

gratitude

Today, someone bought all four THE TOWER OF ENDLESS WORLDS books at once.

That was nice. Thank you, whoever you are.

###

I used a PC for the first time when I was twelve. Specifically, a 386SX running MS-DOS 5.0 that turned up in my sixth-grade classroom when I was twelve. No one knew how to use it, not even the teacher, so I got a book on DOS from the library and taught myself how to use it. It is safe to say that I paid more attention to that computer than anything else that happened that year. (Though, to be fair, the skills I learned playing with DOS would one day be the foundation of a nicely selling book.)

I am always grateful that I did not grow up with computers from an early age. Because of that, the sense of wonder has never quite worn off. I work with computers and tablets and smartphones every day (in both of my jobs), and sometimes they seem less like machines and more like wonderful objects crafted by wizards, and I marvel that men, mere men, have fashioned such things by the strength and skill of their hands.

###

Of course, whatever the circumstances, it’s always best to remember this:

You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.
