a writer writing about a writer writing about writing

There comes a time, if a writer has been a writer long enough, that he starts to remember nothing else but writing, and then writes a book about a writer having difficulties writing.

Don’t do this. It’s almost always dreadfully boring.

Ah, but dreadfully easy to sell to The New Yorker, so I’m told. At least if you have the Big Name to go along with having been a writer that drearily long.

See, that’s why I don’t really want to be a full-time writer. I think I could get more done, but I’d lose my grip on reality (such as it is).

Metafiction always strikes me as the height of authorial pomposity.
