ebooks vs paper books

As someone who never got rid of a book ever for any reason for most of my life, I really hate to admit this, but I’ve come to prefer reading on an ereader to a paper book.

It’s the font size. You can dial up the font size as large as you like, and your eyes don’t have to work as hard. Even on a lower-resolution tablet screen, if you make the font big enough, it’s easier than reading smaller print in a paper book.

I reached the same conclusion last year. I have about 2500 books and am slowly getting rid of most of them. What is helping me along, is the realization, as I sort thru them is that a large majority of them are absolute drivel.

Yeah. These days I only acquire my absolute favorites in paperback, stuff I know I want to reread later.

  • I prefer ereaders because of their search, bookmark, and notes functions – especially for non-fiction.

The Popular Highlights feature is handy – I’m always amused to see what people highlight in my books.

  • Can you give an amusing example of a popular highlight in a ghosts or cloak games book? (I could use a little humor right now).

Morgant gets a bunch of them. From GHOST IN THE RAZOR:

“I have to admit,” said Morgant, “when I thought of all the many disastrous ways this venture could end, I did not think carrying a naked Kyracian out of the Tower was one of them.”

Caina grunted, breathing hard. “Won’t make much of a painting, will it?”

      Morgant barked out a laugh.

Another one from GHOST IN THE SEAL:

Kylon frowned. “What did you have in mind? You’re not going to burn down the building, are you?”

Morgant scoffed. “That is Ciaran’s favorite tactic, not mine.”

  • I guess now that I think about, you do use humor effectively in ghosts, especially once Morgant shows up. The humor is easy to forget about because Caina is a pretty serious character, as opposed to Nadia who is a wise-ass.

Did you specifically develop Morgant’s character to be able to inject humor?

I originally envisioned Morgant as basically a two hundred year old cynic. The humor was sort of an outgrowth of that.

The difference between Caina and Nadia is interesting. I think of Caina as being much more emotionally stable than Nadia – she has problems with anger management, but she has way more lines she won’t cross than Nadia. Nadia, by contrast, wants to save her brother, and is capable of justifying almost anything to herself so long as it can be tentatively connected to her brother’s welfare.

The overall plot arc of the CLOAK GAMES series is “bad person learns, gradually and entirely against her will, to become a hero”, so I am looking forward to the future books in that series. 🙂

      • I’m looking forward to the future books in the CLOAK GAMES series too. So I wish you’d hurry up and get the frosty stuff outta the way (I hate the cold so it’s a series I just can’t warm up to) and get back to my favorite series.

I fell in love with e-readers the first time I got my hands on a Kindle back in 2010. I have only bought one physical book since that day and that was because it didn’t have a kindle version on release day.

Living in a small town in Ireland with no real book shop means I have to wait 2-3 days for books to arrive from amazon. My favourite feature of ebooks is that I can be reading a book within a minute of buying it. The fact I can fit my kindle in my jacket pocket and take it anywhere I go is brilliant as well.

The number of self published authors I’ve come to love is staggering, books I would never have gotten to enjoy if I hadn’t made the switch to digital books.

I stumbled across ‘Child of the Ghosts’ back on February 20 2014. A search of my order history on amazon shows I have 56 orders matching Jonathan Moeller and I’ve enjoyed every one of them.

Thanks! I’m glad you liked all 56 orders. 🙂

The immediate availability of ebooks is nice as well. My town has a small bookshop, so I order stuff from them, but there’s a lot of stuff they can’t get, and the Kindle is excellent for that.

Once I picked up my first Kindle back in 2012, I never purchased another paper book again. One thing I love about the Kindle is all of the indie authors, such as yourself, that I have found, and have returned to me a love for Fantasy!

Getting older sucks, and the ability to make the font bigger on a whim is a HUGE plus!!

      Glad you enjoyed the books!

The font size thing is really, really nice.
