SOUL OF DRAGONS, nine years on

This December marks nine years since I finished writing SOUL OF DRAGONS.

I very clearly remember writing SOUL OF SERPENTS, since that was the first book I ever wrote to self-publish without trying to submit it to tradpub. But I only have a minimal memory of writing SOUL OF DRAGONS, because at the time I was working a full-time job and a part-time job. From September 2011 through December 2011 I would write over lunch, and then from 10 PM to 11 PM before I went to bed, though often that slipped to 11 PM to 12 PM, depending on how much work I had from the part-time job. Then I would get up at 5:45 to go to the gym before my main job.

You can burn the candle from both ends for a surprisingly long time, but you can’t do it forever. This was not a sustainable schedule in the long term, and consequently my memory of writing that book is kind of a blur. I remember writing Lucan’s final battle scenes in the dream sequence, and I remember writing the scene where Mazael and Romaria were cold in the mountains because it had been below zero that day, which inspired the scene. I can recall writing a few other bits, but most of the time when I look at something in SOUL OF DRAGONS to check continuity, it’s like “Huh! Guess I wrote that!”

But! Since then SOUL OF DRAGONS has sold 22,000 copies and had 450,000 page reads from its various stints in Kindle Unlimited. Thanks for reading, everyone!

Once of the nice things about indie publishing is that you can still get paid for work you did at 11:30 PM nine years ago when you really wanted to go to bed instead. 🙂

Thank you Jonathan Moeller for setting me down the path of the fantastic books you have written. It all started with Soul of Serpents and I have not stopped reading your books and look forward to more. Thank you again.
