KNIGHT SWORD, EPISODE 2

You climb out of bed and cross to the window, curious to see who is pounding on the door at the middle of the night. Some illiterate peasant, no doubt, in desperate need of your father’s services to read a land title. For a moment you wonder if it’s Dietrich, come to carry you away, and a warm flush spreads through you at the thought.

A warmth that vanishes the instant you look out the window.

A score of orcish soldiers in the crimson livery of the High Queen wait in the street, spears in hand. At their head stands a tall man in a hooded cloak, his face shadowed within the cowl. You see black plate armor beneath the cloak, and the sigil of a silver raven upon his cuirass.

The man is a knight of the Raven, one of the High Queen’s agents. But that is impossible! The Ravens only pursue evildoers. Your father is a good man.

“Jerome of Moridun!” bellows the Raven, his voice a grating rasp. “In the name of Ashanavere, the High Queen, I command you to come forth! You have betrayed your Queen,  made alliance with rebels and traitors, and committed grievous crimes! Come out and deliver yourself up to justice.”

Your hands tighten on the windowsill. This can’t be happening – your father is a good man, surely he would never rebel against the Queen, he’s not a traitor…
The Raven looks up, eyes sweeping the house, and you feel the sudden shock of the black-armored knight’s gaze.

You also see a glimmer of something like yellow fire in the depths of the cowl.

Sudden fear seizes you, and you jerk back from the window, heart hammering in your chest.

This can’t be happening. The High Queen’s soldiers only arrest malefactors. Your father is no rebel. This has to be some kind of mistake.
