KNIGHT SWORD, A TERMINAL EPISODE

“Come, girl,” says Caius. “Quickly!”

He leads you into the kitchen, making for the cellar stairs, and comes to a sudden stop.

Four orcs have already climbed through the kitchen windows, and more are coming through. The lead orc is huge, nearly seven feet tall, and missing most of his nose, which makes it look like a black pit opened in the center of his face.

Behind you the house shudders beneath the force of a magical spell, you hear your father start to scream in sudden agony, and the noseless orc grins.

“Ah,” says the orc. “The child has the sword. Kill them both. But touch the sword and the master will have your heads.”

Caius yanks a dagger from his belt, and the orcs charge.

It is over so fast you can barely follow it. Caius lies dead on floor, and you slump against the wall, shuddering, pinned in place by a spear through your chest.

It hurts. A lot.

The noseless orc examines you for a moment, then gently pries the sheathed longsword from your fingers.

You try to take it back, but you can’t. You promised your father you would hold the sword. You promised.

“Great Czernobaal,” murmurs the orc, reaching for his belt, “I ask that you accept this sacrifice, in the name of the High Queen.”

A dagger flashes in the orc’s hand, and everything goes black.
