“Calvia, did you have any luck at the Temple of Tethene?”

“A fair bit, but I paid for it,” said Calvia.

Caina frowned. “Not with blood, I hope.”

Mardun laughed. “Cousin Calvia means she offered a large donation to the priesthood of Tethene as a sacrifice. The worthy servants of that goddess were more than willing to speak with her after such generosity.”

“Bribery,” said Kalliope, shaking her head.

“Really, Matron. It was a sacrifice to the goddess, not a bribe. You’re far too cynical about such matters,” said Calvia.

Kalliope blinked. It was one of the very few times that Caina had seen her surprised into silence.

“But, yes, it was a bribe,” said Calvia. “Very effective, too.”
