The Desert Spear, by Peter V. Brett – a one-sentence book review

At about 9PM and page 400, I said to myself “screw it, I’m finishing this book“, even though I have to get up at 5:30AM to go run four miles, and then go to work afterward, and I made this decision to stay up and read to the end because a.) I like the book’s magic system, and b.) I wanted to see how the interpersonal relationships played out, despite the level of cheese involved in aforementioned interpersonal relationships, (proving, to my regret, that romance is indeed foundational to storytelling) and c.) I liked the depiction of the banality and brutality of preindustrial agrarian society, and d.) I actively detested some of the characters, and hoped they would get their just desserts, which they did not, but that is the danger of reading Book 2 of a planned five book series, but now I am going to bring this monstrously overlong sentence to a close by going to bed.

  • Once I worked on two writing exercises. One was to write a page of action in sentences of fewer than seven words. One was to write a page that was all one sentence. Oddly enough the second was easier.

    I don’t know I had the urge to reminisce here. . . .
